Worming back into the comfort of books (paper and bind format)

I've finally moved on to a new book. It was with some relief and pride that I finished reading my last book 'Under The Table', which was really more of a culinary autobiography. The anecdotes of learning to be a chef in a French Culinary School did fascinate me until I gave up trying to read the names of the dishes that the author had to learn to cook. No, I couldn't even fathom what it was, despite pretty detailed description and some recipes from the author. Coupled with the existence of the Samsung tablet in my life for the past one year, I have to admit that reading as a hobby has taken backseat. That largely explained the terribly, shamefully slow progress I was making with that book.

But. Let's all look forward, shall we?

I have started on a new book 'The Social Animal', which is really a semi-non-fiction story that tells of how our subconscious mind decides (to a large extent) our success in life. So far, the progress has been noteworthy. Well, because the book is seriously insightful and interesting, plus funny at the same time. Also because... yup, the tablet has been sent for servicing and thus, has been cast out of my life and my preciously little free time for now. At least, until Sunday.

The truth is, the feeling of holding a real book in hand on MRT rides is far more gratifying than holding a device (especially when many functions of that device are heavily dependent on a particular F-up telco in Singapore that shares the same first syllable as Singapore). Oh, and so very easily engaging that Bishan to One-North just feels 5 mins nearer.

The next rung to move up in this ladder of gratifying and therapeutic activities would be to read in bed, cup of tea by the bed, on a weekend afternoon (with any luck, a rainy one too). Oh, how lovely that would be.

I think I have had quite enough of being connected to the unreal and distracting world of Internet and apps at, literally, fingertips. It's gonna take effort to withdraw from these, but surely, worth a try.
